VOICES FROM THE FIRE: Tim Heerdink

Wolf in Temptation

This morn, I walked dressed
in cloth I’m not accustomed
when population marks zero
within my radius of reach.

Hunger transports me
out from my dark den
so these urges can
be extinguished
before flames
take me.

I see your beauty
& I wish you could
feel how hard it is
to be me underneath
these clothes.

Strip me
of this false nature,
ride me
until I come
in the sweet
darkness
you’ve been hiding
all along.

Taking Traitors among Pines & Wheat Fields

Roll the dice, thieves,
take your turn
along the forest where
latent adversities await
as you sneak others’ spoils.

The colors upon your sleeve
imitate friendly alliances,
but you come from a tribe of one.

Harvest is coming
with the next full moon,
so we prepare despite
the uncertainty cards offer.

Blood spoils the earth
in the third act
of this play.

There’s going to be
a lot of death
through these weeks,
& it’s only going to worsen
‘til the traitor is found.

Lessen your anxiety;
these pines don’t let slip
any of the land’s secrets.

Three Rings before Silence

                        I

This bowl of thick smog
covers & entraps us all
without room to gasp.

                        II

Nails across closed doors
scratching for an escape path
never to be found.

                        III

Vocal chords are strained
‘til silence takes residence
& we’re forgotten.
